In February 1997, Marcos returned to Brazil, after a period of four years working on a radio station in Turin Italy.
While there, he noticed that several radio stations, Christian and not, started operating in Brazil as community radios.
Being working on the radio and TV industry since 1986, Marcos felt the desire to start a radio broadcasting Gospel music 24/7.
Then, on the 18TH of August 1997, Radio DJ started broadcasting as a low power FM radio with a 25 W transmitter, covering only the local neighbourhood.
It was only possible to be 24 hours on the air due with the local people cooperation.
As Marcos had so many years of experience as a broadcaster, Radio DJ soon became known as a radio with both good content and quality.
Because of that, Marcos started receiving threats and persecutions by people not happy with Radio DJ achievements.
The threats became reality when one day while Marcos was visiting his father and someone called at the door.
As he got out answering the door, Marcos was grabbed by three men, armed with automatic pistols, which started beating him.
They said they were federal agents, but didn’t show any badges to confirm it.
Marcos was handcuffed, beaten up by the officers and received death threats, having a pistol pointed to his head.
Although he was handcuffed, Marcos managed to get to the front of his father’s house.
Once there, his neighbours went to see what was happening, only after their arrival, the police stopped beating him.
Marcos remained handcuffed attached to the railings in front of his father’s house.
The policemen, from the Federal Police in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, said that they went there to talk and Marcos started beating them.
One detail, the officers were in three, one of them very strong and 2 meters tall, they were armed with automatic pistols and Marcos were handcuffed.
Even though, Marcos was accused of disrespecting an authority and physically assaulting police officers.
Marcos has being receiving death threats for over two years, causing so much distress for himself and his family.
After this happened, being handcuffed, beaten up and death threaten by the federal officers, Marcos decided that it was not safe for him to keep living in his city.
In March 2000, Marcos left Brazil and arrived in London, England where he auto-exiled and never returned to Brazil since.
In England, he learned that the Federal police went to Radio DJ studios and took all the equipments from there.
After consulting his Lawyer, Marcos decided to issue a writ asking for the return of Radio DJ equipments.
After a while, the Judge ruled that the police action were illegal and that they should return the broadcasting equipments to Radio DJ and the police have done so.
Radio DJ has asked the Brazilian Communications Ministry a license to operate an FM radio station.
And although we receive our equipments back, we decided not to broadcast until being given a license to do so.
Other than the FM, after a time of research, Radio DJ started in February 2000, broadcasting to the whole world through the internet.
Radio DJ was the FIRST station on the steel valley and one of the first in Brazil to broadcast over the internet.
Our vision which was only to cover a local neighbourhood, reached the end of the world.
We started receiving messages from all over Brazil and countries as far as Canada, Italy and Japan.
We would not like to be just one more radio, but with a vision to do something different from the others.
Radio DJ was the first radio in Brazil to play Gospel dance music, which opens the door to the DJs and gospel dance movement in Brazil.
Radio DJ was the first radio in Brazil to have an exclusive program playing black, rock and electronic music.
Radio DJ had a program with both Portuguese and English music, but as we had a huge amount of English songs, we decided to start a second radio, broadcasting English music only.
Then in December 2003, we started broadcasting from London, Radio DJ International, and playing English gospel music 24/7 over the internet.
After the split, Radio DJ in Brazil started a program with 100% Brazilian music, just a few in Brazil doing so.
When we begun Radio DJ, almost ten years ago, we were one of the first radios to broadcast 24/7 over the internet.
There were just a few web radios, but today, thousands of stations are doing the same, and most of them, much better then Radio DJ.
So we decided that it’s the time to change and to do something different.
Once more, seeking to walk new ways, DJ Ministries reached the conclusion to stop broadcasting over the internet and invest in less explored fields, like video streaming and Pod casting.
From 18TH of August 1997 to the 1ST of April 2007 is a long time, almost ten years on the air, 24 hours a day.
We are sure that we accomplished our mission, starting, working and finishing our radios according to God’s will and guidance.
And we only have thanks to give to God for multiplying our vision, which was only to broadcast to a local neighbourhood, but with God’s grace, reached the whole planet.
We also would like to thank everyone which, during almost ten years, was part of Radio DJ family: technicians, speakers, programmers, engineers and prayer supporters.
To each one of you thank you very much and may The Lord be you pay.
